Tonight, BAMP presented the 1st annual Republik Music Festival at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. The festival was a celebration of reggae music, headlined by Steel Pulse, with performances by Matisyahu, Rebelution, The Dirty Heads & The Green. I haven’t had much experience shooting concerts, but I got lucky and got a press pass from Matisyahu to shoot his performance. Backed by Dub Trio, I think all of Matisyahu’s fans would agree that he put on an amazing show. I just hope these photos do him justice.

Lazy Sunday

Spent part of the afternoon with Dallas and Ed White at Ali‘i Kula Lavendar Farm in Kula today. I was too lazy to take pictures, so I set up the camera with the intervalometer and let it fire one frame every second until we left. Forty-five seconds of the same scene seemed a little boring, so I tried to do a quick edit and chop it up a little.

Due to the moon’s slightly elliptical orbit, it sometimes gets a little closer to Earth than usual. Tonight is one of those times. Tonight’s full moon appears 13% bigger and 30% brighter than usual, due to the closest pass the moon has made in almost 20 years. Cloud cover obscured much of the moonrise, so I tried to get something a little different from the usual images of a GIANT moon taken with an ultra-telephoto… Also, I didn’t have a tripod with me, so these are all handheld, with the wide shots at high ISO, which is why they’re a little grainy…

So while I was sitting at work yesterday, I had a front row view of the lightning going off just offshore of Maui. As I was leaving work, it seemed like the storm was dying down, so I thought it was another missed opportunity.

But after a couple of hours it seemed to pick up again on the other side of the Haleakala. It’s not often that we get treated to lightning shows here (not actual lightning bolts anyway), so I jumped at the chance to get some shots. I grabbed my gear and took my truck up to Polipoli.

Instead of standing in the middle of a field with a tripod during a lightning storm, I setup my 7D with a 10-22mm lens on a suction cup mount attached to the outside of my truck. I used a remote release from inside the truck and fired away. Here’s what I got.
